Silica is the name of a group of minerals containing silicon and oxygen in chemical combination having the general formula SiO2.
Overexposure to respirable crystalline silica can lead to a disabling, nonreversible, and sometimes fatal lung disease known as silicosis. In 2002, between 250-300 American workers died from silicosis and over one million will be exposed to crystalline silica.
